VakifBank Istanbul and Vero Volley Milano delivered a CEV Champions League quarterfinal classic in Istanbul, with the home side eventually prevailing 3–2 after a tense five-set battle. The match swung back and forth, keeping the crowd on edge until the final rally.
VakifBank opened strongly, taking the first set 25–22 thanks to the powerful hitting of Tijana Bošković, who led her team with 23 points. Milano responded in the second set, tightening their block and serving game to win 25–16, leveling the contest. The third set saw VakifBank regain control, dominating 25–16 with Marina Markova and Zehra Güneş contributing crucial points at the net.
The fourth set was the most dramatic. Milano, led by Paola Egonu’s relentless attacking, edged out a 25–23 win to force a decider. In the fifth and final set, VakifBank’s composure proved decisive. Their balanced attack and disciplined defense carried them to a 15–12 victory, sealing the match 3–2.
Statistically, VakifBank finished with 104 points to Milano’s 100, highlighting just how evenly matched the teams were. Both sides recorded 13 blocks, but VakifBank’s higher attack efficiency (49% compared to Milano’s 42%) made the difference. Milano’s serving was more aggressive, producing 12 aces, yet errors undermined their momentum.
In the end, VakifBank’s depth and resilience shone through. Bošković was the standout performer, supported by Markova’s 17 points and Güneş’s presence at the net. Egonu led Milano with 19 points, but her efficiency dipped under pressure. Despite the loss, Milano showed they could challenge Europe’s elite, while VakifBank reinforced their reputation as perennial contenders.
