The 2025/2026 TAURON Liga season culminated in one of the most compelling narratives in recent Polish volleyball history, as PGE Budowlani Łódź captured their historic first-ever championship title.
For most of the year, the story of the league belonged entirely to KS DevelopRes Rzeszów. Rzeszów marched through the regular season with overwhelming authority, locking up the top seed with a massive five-month undefeated streak.
Led by the lethal serving and attacking of Krystal Bannister, who topped the league with 56 aces, they also secured the Polish Supercup. They entered the postseason as the undisputed favorites, heavily expected to cruise to the trophy.
In stark contrast, Budowlani Łódź had to fight through adversity just to earn their spot in the finals. While Rzeszów enjoyed a relatively smooth playoff run, Łódź faced immediate trouble in the quarterfinals, where they had to survive two exhausting, consecutive five-set marathons against LOTTO Chemik Police.
Though they managed to sweep UNI Opole in the semifinals, they entered the best-of-five championship series as definitive underdogs against a rested and dominant Rzeszów squad.
The finals quickly transformed into a gritty, back-and-forth battle where home-court advantage dictated the early momentum. Rzeszów struck first with a dominant sweep at Hala Podpromie, but Łódź answered back with a firm four-set win on their own court.
This pattern repeated over the next two matches, with Rzeszów taking Game 3 and Łódź bravely forcing a decisive Game 5. The true turning point came down to tactical adaptations and mental resilience, as Budowlani Łódź engineered a masterclass in defensive coordination to slowly neutralize Rzeszów’s formidable offense.
his historic triumph belongs to the core stars of PGE Budowlani Łódź, who stepped up exactly when it mattered most.
At the net, Slovenian middle blocker Saša Planinšec became an impenetrable wall, shifting her positioning to completely disrupt Rzeszów's top hitters. Her defensive dominance gave Swiss opposite Maja Storck the freedom to take over the series. Storck carried the offense on her shoulders, going toe-to-toe with the league's best to finish her spectacular campaign with 461 total points.
This firepower was perfectly orchestrated by setter and captain Alicja Grabka, whose tactical distribution kept the opposition guessing all night. Behind them, libero Justyna Łysiak anchored the defense with relentless back-row digging, turning impossible saves into crucial counter-attacks.
Together, these key players engineered the ultimate upset on Rzeszów's home floor, cementing their legacy as Polish champions.
