Women’s volleyball is enjoying a genuine boom in the Golden State, with the sport gaining momentum on both sides of the American game: the rapidly developing professional scene and an exceptionally strong collegiate landscape. 
California is home to a long list of excellent university programs with proud traditions and national ambitions. Among them, Stanford, USC and UCLA stand out as the state’s three leading programs, combining historic success, national recognition and continued relevance at the highest level of the collegiate game.
Stanford Cardinal
Stanford joined the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 2024 after decades as one of the leading programs in the Pac-12, but the change has done little to alter the Cardinal’s place among the nation’s elite. 

Stanford quickly adapted to its new conference, finishing near the top of the standings in its first season before winning the ACC championship in 2025, sharing the title with Pittsburgh. 

The Cardinal now enters 2026 looking to defend its crown, with Pittsburgh, Louisville and the increasingly competitive SMU among its main conference rivals. 

Julia Blyashov, Lizzy Andrew and Logan Parks will be among the key players to watch as Stanford looks to maintain its position at the top of the ACC and remain a national contender.

USC Trojans
USC joined the Big Ten Conference in 2024, bringing one of the most historic names in American women’s volleyball into a new and particularly demanding environment. 

The conference is widely regarded as one of the deepest in the country, with established powers such as Nebraska, Wisconsin, Purdue and Penn State providing a formidable test throughout the season. 

For the Trojans, the move has meant adapting to a different competitive landscape while maintaining the ambitions that have long defined the program. 

In 2026, USC will again face some of the Big Ten’s strongest teams, with players such as Adonia Faumuina, London Wijay and Leah Ford among those expected to play important roles.

UCLA Bruins
Like USC, UCLA joined the Big Ten in 2024, taking another of California’s historic volleyball programs into a new competitive environment. 

The Bruins now face a demanding conference schedule while building on a tradition that has made them one of the state’s most recognizable programs. 

UCLA’s 2026 roster features players such as Maggie Li, Ava Sarafa and Hazel Alevok, who will be key to the Bruins’ ambitions in their new conference.

And with USC and UCLA now sharing the Big Ten, their historic crosstown rivalry has gained an extra edge: their meetings are not only battles for Los Angeles volleyball supremacy, but also important conference matchups in one of the strongest leagues in the country.
