The German Women’s National Team pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 Volleyball Nations League, handing Brazil their very first defeat of the season in a gripping five-set match (26-24, 28-26, 15-25, 19-25, 16-14).

Disputed at the Ankara Sports Hall in TĂĽrkiye, this intense Pool 4 encounter saw the Germans display incredible resilience to shatter the South Americans' perfect tournament streak.

Capitalizing on high offensive efficiency during crunch time, Germany narrowly snatched the first two frames to shock the world number two ranked squad.

Brazil’s response was swift and powerful, orchestrated by the offensive duo of Ana Cristina and Helena, who both logged a match-high 21 points.
By tightening their backcourt defense and speeding up their transition plays, the Brazilians completely dictated the third and fourth sets (25-15, 25-19), wiping out the deficit to force a decisive tie-break.
Despite losing all momentum and battling physical fatigue from a grueling five-set loss to TĂĽrkiye just the night before, the German players managed to steady their nerves when it mattered most.
The final frame matured into a tactical chess match where Germany ultimately seized the edge to close it out at 16-14. Outside hitter Pia Timmer anchored the German offense, finishing as her team's top scorer with 17 points.
Beyond giving Germany a massive confidence boost in their quest for the knockout stage, this surprise result shook up the very top of the VNL standings by removing the tournament's final undefeated team.
